Overview

Shivneri Fort is a historic fort in Maharashtra, known as the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire.
It is located near Junnar in Pune district and is strategically built on a hill, offering a strong defense against invaders.
The fort has seven massive gates, each built for security, and a well-planned water management system.
Inside the fort, you’ll find the Shivai Devi Temple, where Shivaji Maharaj was named after Goddess Shivai.
The fort also houses Badami Talav, a water reservoir that supplied water to residents during ancient times.
Shivneri has a unique triangular shape and is surrounded by steep cliffs, making it nearly impenetrable.
The fort was under the control of Mughals, Bahamanis, and Nizams before being reclaimed by the Marathas.
The trek to the fort is moderately easy and offers stunning views of the Sahyadri mountain range.
It is a popular tourist and trekking destination, especially for history enthusiasts and devotees of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Every year, on Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti (19th February), thousands of people visit Shivneri Fort to honor his legacy.
