Overview

Nimgiri and Hanumantgad are twin hill forts situated near Junnar in Pune district, Maharashtra. Perched at approximately 3,500 feet, they were strategically built to safeguard the ancient trade route from Junnar to Kalyan via Naneghat.
Nimgiri Fort, believed to date back to the Satavahana era, showcases rock-cut steps, water cisterns, and remnants of temples, reflecting its historical significance. Hanumantgad, constructed by the Fond Sawants of Sawantwadi, served as a defense against Portuguese and Kolhapur rulers. The fort's architecture includes bastions, rock-cut cisterns, and remnants of gateways, indicating its military importance.
The trek to these forts offers a blend of history and nature, with panoramic views of the Sahyadri ranges. The surrounding area is rich in flora, and the forts themselves are enveloped by dense forests, making them a haven for trekkers and history enthusiasts alike.
